GIORNATE DI STUDIO E SEMINARI
EMU School "Ion partitioning in ambient temperature aqueous systems: from fundamentals to applications in climate proxies and environmental geochemistry" |

Oviedo (Spain)
| 2010 06 27-30 |
The school will focus on the distribution of major, minor, and trace elements in water-rock interactions and during biomineralization, and the applications of these systems to current research topics in climate change and environmental conservation. The school will start with a session on thermodynamics, kinetics, and geochemical modelling of ion partitioning, which will include lectures and computer demonstrations by Manuel Prieto (University of Oviedo), Andrew Putnis (University of Münster), and Dimitri Kulik (Paul Scherrer Institute). A session on ion partitioning and isotopic fractionation in low temperature geochemical systems will follow, embracing a diversity of scenarios of precipitation-dissolution of carbonates and sulphates (Michael Böttcher, Leibniz Institute for Baltic Research), water-rock interactions in the marine environment (Christophe Monnin, University of Toulouse- CNRS), mineral replacement reactions (Christine Putnis, University of Münster; Lurdes Fernández-Díaz, University of Madrid), and climate controls of trace element variations in stalagmites (Ian Fairchild, University of Birmingham). A third session will deal with the environmental implications of ion partitioning and will include lectures on the uptake of toxic metals (Athanasios Godelitsas, University of Athens; José Manuel Astilleros, University of Madrid), ion partitioning effects during carbonation of silicate minerals (Eric Oelkers, Univeristy of Toulouse-CNRS), and applications of co-crystallization in nuclear waste repositories (Dirk Bosbach, Forschungszentrum Jülich). The school will finish with a session on trace element partitioning during biomineralization of corals (Anne Cohen, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute), foraminifera and coccoliths (Heather Stoll, University of Oviedo).

International School on Adsorption, Absorption and Crystal Growth |

Gargnano (Italy)
| 2010 04 18-23 |
The School "Adsorption, Absorption and Crystal Growth" is aimed at introducing the interested people to the adsorption phenomena occurring at the interface between crystals and their surrounding mother phase (vapour, solution or melt). An important place will be given to the equilibria between an adsorbed phase on both "foreign" and "reactive" substrates. The modification of the growth modes of crystal faces will be related to the foreign adsorption (solvent and impurities effects). The crystal-chemical specificity of the 2D-epitaxy will be considered for the understanding of the habit change of crystals. The kinetics of crystal nucleation and growth will be detailed according to whether the foreign adsorption remains at the crystal surface or is followed by the absorption into the crystal lattice where either usual or anomalous mixed crystals originate.
Owing to its methodological character, the School is open to the topics of the crystal growth research which concern the Materials Science, the Bio-crystallization and mineralization, the Earth Sciences and all other fields where crystallization is a key step (pharmaceuticals, scaling and water treatment, etc).

Microstructures and Physico-Chemical Properties of Earth and Planetary Materials |

Verbania
| 2010 02 8-12 |
Transport properties in the Earth and Planets are deeply controlled by microstructural arrangement. Viscosity, permeability, porosity, electrical conductivity, seismic attenuation, chemical diffusion are influenced by grain size, shape preferred orientations, crystal preferred orientations and/or by a variety of microstructural heterogeneities on a dimension scale ranging from nanometers to meters or more. The microstructure of rocks and minerals records genetic processes testifying to incredible complexities in the formation of our planet. The unceasing game of strain and annealing processes in nature have led to an endless combination of the fabric observed in metals and ceramics. In the framework of the education activites of the Petrology Group of the Italian Society of Mineralogy and Petrology and of the Marie Curie Research Training Network - c2c (crust to core), this short course will review the fundamentals of microstructure development moving from the principles in material science to applications in mineralogy, petrology and geophysics. Original contributions from participants are also welcome for inciting discussion on "hot topics" in microstructural analysis.
