International EXPO/SIR workshop - Crystal structure solution (powders and single crystal): theory and practice

2014 06 10-13
The International EXPO/SIR Workshop taking place 10-13 June 2014 at "Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra e Geoambientali", University of Bari, Bari, Italy is now open for registration.
To register click on: http://www.ba.ic.cnr.it/workshop2014/. Deadline for registration: March 28, 2014
The International EXPO/SIR Workshop will focus on the latest advances of the crystallographic methods for solving structures by both powder (Module 1) and single crystal (Module 2) diffraction data. In particular, it will be devoted to the use of the latest versions of EXPO and SIR, two packages widely used by the international scientific community. The workshop will include theoretical and practical sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to personally use EXPO and/or SIR under the supervision of the authors.
A limited number of IUCr grants are available for young scientists.

DUST 2014

Castellaneta Marina (TA)

2014 06 1-6
The Italian Association for the Study of Clays (AISA) and the Institute of Methodologies for Environmental Analysis (IMAA-CNR) are pleased to invite you to DUST 2014, an International Conference on Atmospheric Dust. The main themes of the Conference are: Transport & Deposition; Modelling & Field Studies; Instrumentations & Measurements; Chemical & Mineralogical Studies; Impact on Health & Environment; Extraterrestrial Provenance.
DUST2014 provides an unique opportunity for mineralogists, physicists, geochemists, engineering, volcanologists, chemists and for many other specialists to share ideas and knowledge on the boundless world of the atmospheric particles. Pre-register using the conference website www.dust2014.org and we will inform you when it is updated.
This first announcement is to invite you to serve as a session chair: submit a session proposal before May 20, 2013.

3rd International Mortar Dating Workshop

2014 04 14-16
In keeping with the tradition of the previous two workshops held in Turku/Aland (Finland, 2010) and in Mallorca (Spain, 2012), the 3rd Mortar Dating Workshop to be held in Padova in 2014 wishes to offer a dynamic forum to the scientific community working on historical mortar and plaster dating. It is expected that the leading groups in the field will summarize the results carried out by the method of 14C dating in the last decades, offering a systematic overview of the existing methods and protocols of analysis. Ample space will be devoted to the illustration of state-of-the-art techniques, persisting problems, and future perspectives. Applications to historical mortars and plasters from different ages and geographical areas are welcome. A special session will focus on comparison with other dating techniques, especially those based on stimulated luminescence, TL and alternative methods.
Extended deadline for early bird inscription: 28 february 2014
Extended deadline for abstract submission: 28 february 2014

VI International Conference on Fractals and Dynamic Systems in Geoscience

Perugia (Italy)

2013 09 26
The aim of this conference is to present the latest research and techniques in the application of fractals and dynamic systems to Earth systems, with emphases on predictability of geological risks, natural resources and climate change.
The conference welcomes contributions on all applications of fractals and dynamic systems in the Earth and Environmental Sciences.
Invited Speakers include Shaun Lovejoy (McGill University, CA), Ian Main (The University of Edinburgh, UK), Heinz Otto Peitgen (Jacobs University Bremen, DE), Hans Joachim Schellnhuber (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, DE), Cristian Suteanu (Saint Mary's University, CA).
The conference will be preceded by three days of workshops aimed at training researchers on the use of fractals and dynamic systems methods and techniques on following topics:
- Anisotropy and Inhomogeneity Quantification of Rock Fabrics (J.H. Kruhl & M. Peternell, Technical University Munich and Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz, DE);
- Fractals and Natural Resources (T. Blenkinsop, James Cook University, AU);
- Fractal-Geometry-Based Treatment of Geohazards (C. Suteanu, Saint Mary's University, CA).

EMAC 2013

2013 09 19-21
The aim of this 12th European Meeting on Ancient Ceramics, in accordance with former edition, is the promotion of the methodological development and use of scientific techniques in the study of archaeological and historical ceramic materials for interpreting and solving issues on provenance, production, usage, conservation, age, and technological changes over times and places. Due to interdisciplinary character of this type of studies, researchers and scholars from both human and science background will share their experience and results obtained in their most recently researches. This would encourage scientists with different expertise to join together in new research projects.
Keeping the traditional themes of former editions, the 12th EMAC will cover the following topics:
- methodological developments;:
- dating ceramics;:
- experimental firing;:
- technology and provenance;:
- alteration and conservation;:
- glazed pottery;:
- ceramics as building materials;:
- technical ceramics.
