PhD Position in Isotope Geochemistry |
2009 12 31
|
We are inviting applications for a three-year doctoral fellowship (Ph.D.) starting in early 2010 in the Isotope Geochemistry Group (Prof. B. Bourdon) at ETH Zurich. This project investigates the origin and processes leading to the current state of compositional heterogeneity in the Earth’s mantle. Combined lithophile isotope analyses on a large range of mantlederived rocks, ranging from some of the oldest rocks on Earth to zeroage oceanic basalts and peridotites will investigate the early differentiation, the secular evolution and current composition of the Earth’s mantle. The project will include method refinement and radiogenic isotope measurements with thermal and plasma ionization mass spectrometry. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct his/her own research in investigating radiogenic isotopes as a tracer for crust-mantle differentiation. Background / Requirements: A completed MSc or Diploma degree in Earth Sciences, preferably with a focus on geochemistry is required. A background in isotope geochemistry, including prior experience in working in clean-room and mass spectrometry facilities is strongly desired. Please send your application (PDF), including cover letter, CV, copies of degree certificates, and the name and contact details of at least two referees by e-mail to: Dr. A. Stracke (stracke@erdw.ethz.ch).

Crystal2Plate - PhD position in Montpellier |
2009 09 01
|
In the frame of a new research and educational program of the European Community, Geosciences Montpellier invites applications of highly motivated individuals for a PhD position starting from October 1st, 2009. "Feedback between melt transport, melt segregation, and deformation in the mantle": this Ph.D. project will couple a petro-structural and geochemical analyses of mantle rocks (in the field and in the lab) to numerical modeling to study the relations between melt transport/segregation and deformation in the mantle. Fine analysis of the microstructures in natural systems with variable melt-rock interactions will be used to constrain feedbacks between deformation and melt segregation.
