Postdoctoral Scholar (Job #11472)
2016 01 31
School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE)
at Arizona State University invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar in high-pressure research in deep-seated hydrogen.
ASU recently won a Keck award (PI: P. Buseck) to study hydrogen in the deep interiors of Earth. The project includes experimental investigation of hydrogen partitioning into planetary constituents by combining nano- containment techniques (P. Buseck and J. Wu) with diamond-anvil cell techniques (S.-H. Dan Shim). The mineral physics group at ASU (PI: S.-H. Dan Shim) seeks applications for a postdoc scholar for conducting high-pressure experiments to understand interactions between the atmosphere and interior. The postdoc will develop, prepare, and conduct high-pressure experiments for studying metal-gas reactions in carbon nano-structures in laser-heated diamond-anvil cells. From the grant, we will acquire a gas-loading system, which the postdoc is expected to use for developing the necessary techniques. Depending on progress, the study will be extended to other important volatiles for planets. The postdoc will also conduct various measurements, including synchrotron X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy, and Raman/IR spectroscopy.
: A Ph.D. in the physical sciences (Earth science, physics, or chemistry) by time of appointment; experience in diamond-anvil cell; familiarity with analytical techniques such as X-ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscopy.
: Strong background in laser heating in diamond-anvil cell; experience in sample preparations and sample recovery from diamond-anvil cell; experience in gas loading for high pressure experiments; knowledge in analysis of diffraction and spectroscopy data; knowledge in element partitioning at high pressure-temperature conditions of deep planetary interiors.
Successful candidates are expected to be able to work in both independent and collaborative group environments and to be self-motivated to accomplish the research goals. The initial appointment is for one year, with subsequent annual renewals for up to two additional years contingent upon satisfactory performance, the needs of the university, and availability of resources. The desired start date is June 2016 but can be negotiated. This position comes with a competitive salary and funding for travel to synchrotron facilities and conferences. Candidates must be within two years from receipt of the doctoral degree.
To apply, please submit a single PDF document to Dan Shim (
) incorporating the following: a cover letter, contact information for three references, curriculum vitae with a publication list, and a statement of past research accomplishments and future research goals (two pages or less).

PhD THESIS IN MINERAL PHYSICS
Behavior of iron, and other ions capable for electron-exchanges in subduction settings
People in charge: Manuel Munoz (UJF/ISTerre), Olivier Vidal (CNRS/ISTerre)
The main objective of this thesis is to characterize the evolution of the oxidation state of iron and other transition metals in various hydrated minerals that form the oceanic crust in subduction zones (alteration, metamorphic or sedimentary minerals). The approach is essentially experimental, based on the use of large-volumes autoclaves allowing good control of experimental conditions (P-T, water/rock, etc.), as well as the use of a hydrothermal diamond-anvil cell for characterizing in-situ reactions. The experimental data will be coupled with predictive thermodynamic models (Vidal & Dubacq, 2009). Characterization of mineral phases will be mainly based on Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy carried out at the synchrotron (e.g., Marcaillou et al., 2011). This project fits into the context of a scientific collaboration with the ID24 and BM23 beamlines of the ESRF (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility) in Grenoble.

Thèse financée par Andra
2012 03 31

PhD position in Geochemistry and Petrology of Silicate Glasses and Melts
2010 10 25
The chemistry and physical state of glassy volcanic phases hold important clues about e.g. distinct phases and styles of magmatic activity, chemical partitioning, magma source conditions and the thermal history of a rock. This project will utilize a multidisciplinary approach in studying volcanic and experimental glasses, to unravel magma genesis and evolution in respect to underlying geological and tectonic processes. The project will rely on a detailed characterization of glasses at a microscopic level using modern analytical methods, such as Raman spectroscopy, ion- and microprobe chemical analysis, FTIR, optical- and scanning electron microscopy, as well as synchrotron radiation based techniques. The acquired knowledge on physical and chemical properties will be translated into the description of generic magmatic processes, as well as their causes and dynamics, by employing quantitative geochemical and petrological modelling tools. Research directions within the program include traditional and experimental petrology, high-temperature geochemistry, mineralogy, diagenetic processes, tectonic modelling and structural geology. Apart from standard equipment, an electron microprobe, as well as hydrothermal and high-pressure experimental laboratories (autoclave and diamond anvil cell), a tectonic analogue laboratory and an SEM exist amongst the facilities (see http://www.geo.uu.se/mpt). The candidate should have a background in geosciences or natural sciences. Special attention will be given to candidates with experience in geochemistry, igneous petrology and in-situ mineral analysis using micro-analytical techniques. For more info follow the link.

The project will include method refinement and radiogenic isotope measurements with thermal and plasma ionization mass spectrometry. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct his/her own research in investigating radiogenic isotopes as a tracer for crust-mantle differentiation. Background / Requirements: A completed MSc or Diploma degree in Earth Sciences, preferably with a focus on geochemistry is required. A background in isotope geochemistry, including prior experience in working in clean-room and mass spectrometry facilities is strongly desired. Please send your application (PDF), including cover letter, CV, copies of degree certificates, and the name and contact details of at least two referees by e-mail to: Dr. A. Stracke (firstname.lastname@example.org).
