http://www.andra.fr/pages/fr/menu1/l-andra/nous-rejoindre/allocations-de-theses-de-doctorat-55.html

The Institute of Geology at the University of Bern, Switzerland, invites applications for a PhD-project on:
“Rutile as a chronometer for the quantification of orogenic processes”
The position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The major objective of the project is to investigate the accessory phases, particularly rutile, in high grade metamorphic rocks as potential tracers of geologic processes.
The study will involve trace element and isotope analyses of metamorphic rutiles from granulite facies rocks thermal ionization and (Laser) multicollector-ICP mass spectrometry, as well as microprobe analyses.
Major and trace element analyses combined with radiogenic isotope systems will be used to characterize the behavior of mostly rutile in rocks of different composition during high temperature metamorphism.

PhD position in Geochemistry and Petrology of Silicate Glasses and Melts |
2010 10 25
|
The chemistry and physical state of glassy volcanic phases hold important clues about e.g. distinct phases and styles of magmatic activity, chemical partitioning, magma source conditions and the thermal history of a rock. This project will utilize a multidisciplinary approach in studying volcanic and experimental glasses, to unravel magma genesis and evolution in respect to underlying geological and tectonic processes. The project will rely on a detailed characterization of glasses at a microscopic level using modern analytical methods, such as Raman spectroscopy, ion- and microprobe chemical analysis, FTIR, optical- and scanning electron microscopy, as well as synchrotron radiation based techniques. The acquired knowledge on physical and chemical properties will be translated into the description of generic magmatic processes, as well as their causes and dynamics, by employing quantitative geochemical and petrological modelling tools.
Research directions within the program include traditional and experimental petrology, high-temperature geochemistry, mineralogy, diagenetic processes, tectonic modelling and structural geology. Apart from standard equipment, an electron microprobe, as well as hydrothermal and high-pressure experimental laboratories (autoclave and diamond anvil cell), a tectonic analogue laboratory and an SEM exist amongst the facilities (see http://www.geo.uu.se/mpt).
The candidate should have a background in geosciences or natural sciences. Special attention will be given to candidates with experience in geochemistry, igneous petrology and in-situ mineral analysis using micro-analytical techniques.

PhD Position in Isotope Geochemistry |
2009 12 31
|
We are inviting applications for a three-year doctoral fellowship (Ph.D.) starting in early 2010 in the Isotope Geochemistry Group (Prof. B. Bourdon) at ETH Zurich. This project investigates the origin and processes leading to the current state of compositional heterogeneity in the Earth’s mantle. Combined lithophile isotope analyses on a large range of mantlederived rocks, ranging from some of the oldest rocks on Earth to zeroage oceanic basalts and peridotites will investigate the early differentiation, the secular evolution and current composition of the Earth’s mantle. The project will include method refinement and radiogenic isotope measurements with thermal and plasma ionization mass spectrometry. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct his/her own research in investigating radiogenic isotopes as a tracer for crust-mantle differentiation. Background / Requirements: A completed MSc or Diploma degree in Earth Sciences, preferably with a focus on geochemistry is required. A background in isotope geochemistry, including prior experience in working in clean-room and mass spectrometry facilities is strongly desired. Please send your application (PDF), including cover letter, CV, copies of degree certificates, and the name and contact details of at least two referees by e-mail to: Dr. A. Stracke (stracke@erdw.ethz.ch).
